Who Uses the ADAS and Why?
Thousands of school sites
across the country have used this survey since 1987, surveying more than two
million students in 47 states. The coordination of a survey effort in a
given community is typically handled by a person or group that is concerned
with the well-being of youth and that has a professional interest in
substance use prevention.
More often than not the
coordinator(s) are employed by a school system, community coalition, youth
services bureau, or regional health department. We work with a great many
individuals who have the following titles: Safe and Drug-Free Schools
Coordinator, Student Assistance Counselor or Coordinator, Health Education
Coordinator, School Counselor, School Nurse, Federal Programs Coordinator,
School Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal, Dean of Students,
Director of Pupil Support Services, Director of Research and Evaluation,
Physical Education/Health Teacher, Municipal Alliance Committee member,
community coalition member, and others. In addition to people in these
roles, we work frequently with researchers at universities, and evaluators
for large scale prevention efforts.
Why do all these people
select the ADAS?
Initially, the decision is
made to undertake a survey project because accurate data is necessary in the
performance of any job. Our clients are concerned with assessing the need
for new prevention efforts in their community, evaluating the programs they
already have in place, being able to accurately report to their funding
sources, and being able to present accurate, objective information to
members of their community.
The ADAS is the first
choice among youth surveys for a variety of reasons. First of all, the ADAS
was developed by researchers with decades of experience in survey design and
substance abuse/prevention research (see Who Developed the
ADAS?) The process was overseen by the
National
Institute on Drug Abuse, which further
ensured that the questionnaire and analysis process were developed using
excellent scientific practice. The ADAS has strong reliability and validity.
The ADAS yields reporting that is extremely user-friendly. The reports are
easy to read, and the data is presented in tables, bar charts and pie charts
that are easy to interpret. Customer service provided by the staff of
