Who Developed the ADAS?
The ADAS was developed at
R.M.B.S.I. with Small Business Innovative Research grant funding from the
National Institute on Drug Abuse in 1983-1986.
The three co-authors of the
survey are Fred Beauvais, Ph.D., Ruth Edwards, Ph.D., and Eugene Oetting, Ph.D.
All three of the authors of the ADAS have many years experience conducting
research on youth substance abuse prevention through the Tri-Ethnic Center for
Prevention Research at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Ruth Edwards, Ph.D.
Trained as a social/environmental psychologist, Ruth Edwards is a Senior
Research Scientist and the Director of the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention
Research at Colorado State University. She has conducted research on drug and
alcohol, violence and other social problems among youth for over 30 years with
funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, and other federal and private agencies. She has
authored numerous professional and lay articles. In addition to co-authoring
RMBSI's surveys, Dr. Edwards is one of the authors of the Community Readiness
Model. She is the former Executive Director of RMBSI, and consults with
communities on readiness issues and on "marketing for prevention" through
FlashStone Research & Consulting, LLC. Dr. Edwards also serves on the Editorial
Board of the international journal, Substance Use and Misuse.
Fred Beauvais, Ph.D.
Fred Beauvais is a clinical psychologist who has published over 75 articles
resulting from his 30 years of research into the nature of drug use problems
among American Indian and other ethnic minority youth. He has received research
funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute on Drug
Abuse, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He serves on
the Editorial Boards for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology
and Ethnicity and Drug Abuse. Dr. Beauvais is a Senior Research
Scientist at the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research at Colorado State
University, and previously served as Director of Research for RMBSI.
Eugene R. Oetting, Ph.D.
Gene Oetting was one of the original founders of Rocky Mountain Behavioral
Science Institute, Inc. He developed the Prevention Planning Model on which the
Prevention Planning Survey was based, and also is a co-author of the Community
Readiness Model. Recently retired, Dr. Oetting thoroughly enjoyed a
distinguished career as a professor of Psychology and as Principal Investigator
and Scientific Director of the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research at
Colorado State University. He has an extensive publishing record in the areas of
youth drug abuse, survey development and social psychology. He has served on
the Editorial Boards of the journals Substance Use & Misuse, Social
Pharmacology, and Drugs and Society.
